On September 20, 2024, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Las Vegas had the honor of attending the 13th Annual Philanthropy Leaders Summit, hosted by the Moonridge Foundation. Held at the historic Las Vegas City Hall, with a simultaneous virtual session in Reno, Nevada, the summit brought together corporate funders, family foundations, individual philanthropists, and nonprofit leaders from around the nation. Focused on the theme What is the Future of Philanthropy?, the event encouraged attendees to explore the evolving landscape of giving on both national and global levels.

This year’s summit featured an impressive lineup of influential speakers, each offering unique insights into how philanthropy is evolving:

  • Justin Fredrickson, Executive Chef at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Delano Las Vegas, and Luxor Hotel and Casino, discussed the role of corporate social responsibility within the hospitality industry and how businesses can serve their communities.

  • Aaron Sanchez, award-winning chef, TV personality, author, and philanthropist, shared his journey of giving back through culinary mentorship, inspiring future generations.

  • Chase Williams, a senior at Bishop Gorman High School and member of Teen Hope Network, brought a youthful perspective, advocating for greater youth engagement in charitable efforts.

  • Brian Gordon, from Applied Analysis, presented the Nevada Corporate Giving Report, offering crucial insights into corporate contributions in the state and how businesses are investing in social good.

  • Erin Morrissey Quinn from Morrissey Insurance, Jess Molasky from the Molasky Family Foundation (and one of the event’s moderators), Dr. Gary Michelson from Michelson Philanthropies, Sophia Rauenhorst, a youth philanthropist, Megan Bradley from the Born This Way Foundation, and Nick Vassiliadis from R&R Partners also provided key insights into the intersection of philanthropy and their respective industries.

In Las Vegas, the summit was hosted by Punam Mathur, a board member of the Moonridge Foundation and Executive Director of the Elaine P. Wynn & Family Foundation, who skillfully guided discussions on the future of philanthropy. Mayor Carolyn Goodman of Las Vegas also graced the event, emphasizing the importance of local philanthropy in strengthening communities. Julie Murray, Board President of the Moonridge Foundation, reinforced the organization’s mission to foster collaboration and inspire action in the philanthropic sector.

A Shared Vision for the Future of Philanthropy

The summit served as a powerful reminder of the critical role philanthropy plays in shaping a better future. The Moonridge Foundation, founded and led by Julie Murray, has long been a catalyst for philanthropic progress in Nevada. Its mission—to promote collaboration among corporate and individual donors to maximize social impact—aligns seamlessly with that of JCI Las Vegas.

JCI Las Vegas, a local chapter of Junior Chamber International, is dedicated to empowering young people to create positive change through leadership, personal development, and civic engagement. Just as the Moonridge Foundation works to inspire new approaches to giving, JCI Las Vegas mobilizes young leaders to take meaningful action in their communities.

A Call to the Next Generation

One of the most inspiring moments came from youth philanthropist Sophia Rauenhorst, who eloquently stated, "Philanthropy is not just for the wealthy or the powerful; it’s for anyone who has the heart to give, no matter how small." Her words resonated deeply with attendees, particularly the youth, who are increasingly stepping up to take leadership roles in philanthropy.

JCI Las Vegas is proud to be part of this movement, which is reshaping the future of philanthropy. As more young people become involved, their fresh ideas and unwavering energy will help drive positive change on a global scale.

To the young leaders of today and tomorrow: the future of philanthropy is in your hands. Every action you take, no matter how small, has the potential to create a ripple effect of kindness and change. Whether through volunteering, advocating for causes, or simply lending a helping hand, your contributions will shape the world of tomorrow.

Remember, "True leadership is not about the position you hold, but the impact you make."

The path is clear—now is the time to step forward and make a difference.
